About this dashboard

A weather monitoring and decision-support tool for Tanzania, combining raw forecasts, sectoral impact analysis and a zoom on its largest coastal city.

Coverage

Tanzania's 31 regions (26 on the mainland, 5 in Zanzibar), 7-day forecasts, hourly and daily data — plus a dedicated analysis point for Dar es Salaam.

Data source

Open-Meteo (no API key): a multi-model forecast blend (ECMWF IFS, GFS, ICON), the ERA5 archive, and CAMS global for air quality and dust. Administrative boundaries from GADM 4.1.

Updates

Data is recalculated on every page load, several times a day as models update.

Impact bulletin

Agriculture, flood risk and health are derived from simple threshold rules tuned to Tanzania's rainy seasons (Masika, Vuli, Msimu). Indicative — this is not an official TMA bulletin.

City focus — Dar es Salaam6.818°S · 39.290°E · ~10 m

Dar es Salaam, a coastal city of more than 5 million people, has a climate of its own: humid heat all year, a daily sea-breeze / land-breeze cycle, the Kaskazi and Kusi monsoons, and flood-prone river valleys such as the Msimbazi. This analysis is computed at the city's own point, not interpolated from the regional average.

💡 Winds are diagnosed from hourly wind direction and speed: the sea breeze (onshore, from the east, afternoon), the land breeze (offshore, from the west, night and early morning), and the prevailing monsoon flow — Kaskazi (north-east, about November to March) or Kusi (south-east, about June to September).

    Sectoral Impact Bulletin

Forecast-derived analysis to support decisions — agriculture, flood risk and public health. Four-colour scale inspired by the impact-based warnings of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA).

    Methods & limitations

How every number on this page is obtained, and what it cannot tell you.

    Regional values

Each region is sampled at 1 to 5 model grid points spread inside its boundary (71 points in total). Rainfall, temperatures and rain probability are the mean of these points; gusts are their maximum. Each card gives the rainfall range found inside the region.

    Forecast model

Open-Meteo best-match blend over East Africa (ECMWF IFS, NOAA GFS, DWD ICON), 7 days, refreshed several times a day. Skill decreases with lead time: days 5 to 7 show a tendency, not a timing.

    Model agreement

For rainfall, each card also shows the range between three global models (ECMWF IFS, GFS, ICON) at the region's reference point. A wide range means low confidence.

    Feels-like temperature

Apparent temperature after Steadman (1994), as computed by Open-Meteo from air temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation. Map classes at 35 and 40 °C.

    Warning scale

Each sector gets a 0-100 score mapped to four colours at 30, 55 and 75, a scale inspired by TMA impact-based warnings. Floods: advisory from about 18 mm in 24 h, warning from 32 mm, major warning from 44 mm; +10 points when gusts reach 60 km/h; three wet days totalling 60 mm raise the level to advisory.

    Agriculture

Rules follow the rainfall regime: bimodal regions (Vuli Oct-Dec, Masika Mar-May) and unimodal regions (Msimu Nov-Apr). Dry spell: under 2 mm over 5 days in season with Tmax of 30 °C or more. Waterlogging: 40 mm in 24 h. Frost: Tmin of 2 °C or less. Heat: Tmax of 35 °C or more.

    Public health

Heat stress on the feels-like maximum (35, 40, 44 °C); hot night: Tmin of 26 °C or more; malaria climate suitability: mean temperature 20-32 °C with at least 30 mm over 7 days (high: 24-30 °C and 80 mm); water-borne risk: 50 mm in 24 h; air: US AQI 101 and 151, dust 150 µg/m³ (CAMS global).

    Limitations

Global models at 9-25 km do not resolve individual storms, coastal breezes or mountain valleys. Thresholds are indicative and have not been validated against Tanzanian impact data. Hourly detail, animation and climatology use one reference point per region. This is not an official TMA product.
